Stretching works best if done consciously. While doing the exercises, your main goal is to relax as much as possible and to create contrast and sensations in the treated areas. This means not to tighten up and pushing hard when your body tells you that the stretch is painful.
With creating contrast and sensations I mean listening to your bodies reactions during and after the stretches. Those are the probably most overlooked, yet most important points to make stretching work.

Breathe while you stretch!
Focus on changes in the „feel of stretch“ that occur while you breathe. Most of the times with inhalation, you will feel in some part of the area you are stretching an increase in tension and with exhalation some decrease in tension. By concentrating on these changes, you will realize that it will become easier for you to relax your body.
Visualize changes after your stretches
When stretching your shoulders correctly, you will find that they feel smoother and lighter afterwards. Concentrate on this feeling and try to visualize how gravity pulls them down. Then, try to consciously relax and let them sink down even more.
You may also use a mirror for help. This way you do not even have to use your imagination and it will be easier for you to see the effects.
